ÉMILE-JACQUES RUHLMANN (1879 – 1933)
An exceptional 'd’Estainville' bedside table or 'Smoker's Companion' in deep black Duco lacquer with a red leather top. The oval body, swollen at its narrowest side, rises above a base that extends into a padded plinth with inverted moldings. The wing-shaped plateau reflects the modernist research the designer began in the mid-1920s. The red leather surface of the top, accentuated by a silvered line detail, creates a striking contrast with the deep black lacquer of the table. On the curved side of the body, five drawers supported by elegant uprights open with silvered bronze handles.
Stamped 'Ruhlmann'.
