ÉMILE-JACQUES RUHLMANN (1879 – 1933)
Rare roller-base variant of the ‘Ruhl’ model divan, created in 1919 by Ruhlmann for his personal use.
Note: Our Santos rosewood divan was most likely produced around 1920 and is listed in the Ruhlmann Archives. The original model referenced in the archives under number 512 NR includes a note regarding the roller base. A reference for
this variant also exists under number 512a NR for the “lit-divan”. It also appears on the earlier drawing of the model 539AR under number 539a for the variant.
The model created in 1919 therefore foreshadows later variants featuring wooden or bronze rollers mounted on pedestals, produced subsequently. It is interesting to note that this sculpted roller motif was also adapted for the bases of desk cabinets
and for the legs of the bookcase designed by Ruhlmann for the Chateau de Vizille.
Referenced under N° 512a AR and 539aNR in the Ruhlmann Archives.
