JEAN-MICHEL FRANK (1895-1941)

Rare Louis XV-style desk armchair, circa 1935. The armchair in carved and tinted beech wood, with arched legs and a curved belt, partly upholstered in green leather. 

 

Stamped twice “J.M. FRANK” and “CHANAUX & C°”, and marked no. 11660 with a dry stamp, as well as 9116, repeatedly crossed out.  A certificate by the Comité Jean-Michel Frank is offered with this piece.

 

The original model, with a caned backrest and seat by Georges Jacob, which inspired this piece, was located in the decorator’s personal office in his apartment on rue de Verneuil. This armchair was created for Jean-Michel Frank’s office at 140, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. 

 

This is the only known example recorded to date. The armchair is featured in the famous photograph by François Kollar, of which the gallery holds an important collection, to be the subject of an upcoming publication.
